This listing is for the Thomas & Friends Wooden Railway range's Toby and his many variants. Released originally by Learning Curve in 1993, the Wooden Railway range has always consisted of wooden trains, vehicles, and whole sets based off Thomas & Friends. After being bought by Tomy in 2011, then having the rights sold to Mattel and it's subsidiary Fisher-Price in 2013, the range was continued as Wooden Railway until 2017, until being rebranded to Thomas Wood in the following year. Then again in 2022, the range was then rebranded back to Wooden Railway until its eventual discontinuation altogether this year in 2024. As a result, the characters have begun to be harder to find and increasingly come in worse and worse condition. The goal of this listing is to make the different years, models, versions and even quality more accessible.
The intent of this listing is to make Toby and his variants accessible in one place, regardless of condition. This listing will feature all grades, A, B, C, and D. I have tried to price these fairly based on their market value in relation to their condition. These vary in condition greatly between the different grades, so the conditions for each grade will be detailed here.
Grade A: These are the best condition trains I have to offer. There is minimal to no paint chipping. Any paint chipping will be on corners or edges, but will be kept to an absolute minimum in order to maintain this grade as being the best condition possible. If a train had a coal tender or any additional tenders, only the main train engine was considered under this criteria. In order to have tenders available for each train, it is acceptable to use a tender from the grade below it as long as it is in passable condition compared to the main engine.
Grade B: There is minimal to some paint chipping. The paint chipping must be on the corners or edges of the train. This should not extend into the overall paint coating of the train. If a train had a coal tender or any additional tenders, only the main train engine was considered under this criteria. In order to have tenders available for each train, it is acceptable to use a tender from the grade below it as long as it is in passable condition compared to the main engine.
Grade C: There is some to extensive paint chipping. The paint chipping covers not only corners or edges, but stretches into the adjacent surfaces, it is not negligible damage compared to Grade B. There may occasionally be a surface that has a small section of paint missing, this is acceptable as long as it is not sizable or repetitive. There may also be minimal dents in the surfaces, and minimal cuts or other damage to edges or corners. Please note that the train will not have any broken features. If a train had a coal tender or any additional tenders, only the main train engine was considered under this criteria. In order to have tenders available for each train, it is acceptable to use a tender from the grade below it as long as it is in passable condition compared to the main engine.
Grade D: There is overwhelming paint chipping. The paint chipping has extended past corners and edges into surfaces, leaving sizable sections bare. There may be some repetitive seconds of paint chipping on surfaces, meaning there is not one section of paint missing, but several small sections adjacent to each other. Overall, there may be some, but not all surfaces missing varying levels of paint, in varying levels of size and repetitiveness. Please note that the train will not have any broken features. If a train had a coal tender or any additional tenders, the tender was also considered under this criteria, as anything below this would be considered broken.
Grade F: Paint chipping has become massive sections of paint missing on multiple sides, leaving many details of the train unrecognizable, if present at all. OR, the item has a broken feature, such as physically damaged or altogether missing wheels. These are not suitable or recommended for play as they may pose a danger to the user. For example, sharp edges from broken features, paint actively peeling off that may be able to be ingested, and wooden erosion that may leave splinters visible and accessible if not handled carefully. These would be best used for a hobby restoration project or custom, but never any casual play by children. I am not responsible for any injury as a result of the issues present in this grade and any trains included. Please handle these carefully.
If you are still worried about the particular condition of a character, I welcome reaching out to ask for up close photos so you can decide for yourself if it meets your standards for its condition! I will provide photos as quick as I possibly can, and as detailed of photos as I can. I am more than happy to work with you and ensure that you are satisfied with your purchase, before and after receiving it, so please do not hesitate to inquire about any questions or concerns you may have.
If there is a character that I do not currently have listed as an option that you are looking for, please feel free to reach out and ask! I will gladly see if I happen to have it in stock across all grades, or find you one that is in good condition for a reasonable price.
If you're looking for any other brands or ranges of Thomas toys, please feel free to look at my store as I am always adding new listings and adding new stock. Please ensure that you are purchasing the right brand or range you're looking for before purchasing!
